Milus had forced Wilkin and his deputy Toran Prichard to resume their work as executioner and torturers so the captured rebels remain in 'mere' servitude, but rapes and murders one of them, hooded at night, like he was often abused in church orphanage. Baroness Love remains politely aloof towards visiting baron Edwin Pryce, unwilling to unite their shires by marriage now he's a widower too. Disgusted to learn that debt-crushed peasant Berwyn Cairn concluded a deal to be publicly quartered as warning in exchange for financial salvation for his family, Wilkin offers the baroness written confession and his true identity to be executed instead, but she works out both men are innocent and insists on the political execution.
